s1.gif (47bytes) Linocut : What is linocut?
An art of relief process in which the patterns cut on a linoleum or rubber plate are printed with oil-based ink.

s1.gif (47bytes) Reduction : What is reduction?
An art of multi-colored prints in which one color is printed each time the pattern in the color is cut on the surface of the block or plate. The surface is 'reduced' as the process goes on, making it impossible to produce more sheets than those printed in the first color. Thus, once the prints are completed, no reprints are possible.

The works shown in the exhibition combine techniques of linocut and reduction, using rubber plates and three to five colors. In each print, I casually started cutting the pattern of the first color, but went more carefully in cutting the patterns of the second, third, fourth and fifth colors. I had to repeat trial-printing with each stroke of the chisel, because one over-cut would irrevocably ruin the whole process. It was an inconvenient, nerve-racking, but challenging process.
